UEFA threatens to exclude PSG from the Champions League after renewing Mbappe’s contract

Paris Saint-Germain is once again under the spotlight. If yesterday’s official La Liga complaint against him and Manchester City is known for what they see as a breach of Financial Fair Play laws, today L’Equipe reported that PSG’s accounts are again being monitored by UEFA.

Journalist Etienne Mawati publishes that “Paris Saint-Germain is required to respond to a request for information about its accounts by experts regarding financial fair play by the European Football Association Financial Control Authority (ICFC).

When Paris Saint-Germain responds to the questions of the above-mentioned body and a detailed examination of the data is carried out, it will be decided whether or not to open a procedure against the Parisian club, which incurred losses of 224.3 million euros in the 2020-2021 season.

The beginning of the problems goes back to 2014, when he was forced to sign a “reconciliation agreement” with the International Football Committee (in fact, the club accepted the sanctions so as not to be punished more harshly) including a fine of 60 million euros.

Already in June 2018, with Paris accounts investigated for several months to judge the true value of PSG’s sponsorship contracts, the ICFC Chamber of Investigation closed the file “without follow-up”. However, the investigation was eventually reopened.

La Liga complaint Paris Saint-Germain for violating fair play

La Liga has already submitted its complaint against Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City to UEFA for violating Financial Fair Play rules. Javier Tebas explained the impossibility of Paris Saint-Germain renewing Mbappe’s contract with the losses he has incurred in recent seasons: “Paris Saint-Germain will end up losing 200 million euros, they have previously lost 300 million … and they go and renew Mbappe’s contract with such amounts. They are cheating.”

PSG does not want to comment on these points. La Liga had already lodged a complaint with UEFA on 22 August 2017 against PSG after signing Mbappe and Neymar for a total of more than €400 million. Ten days later, the European Commission opened an “official investigation”.

Tony Rocca, CEO of the Sports Law Institute, comments on this matter, saying: “If it is proven that they are in violation of the Financial Fair Play rules, UEFA can exclude Paris Saint-Germain from all competitions.”
