Real Madrid cost PSG 40 million euros in the first response to Mbappe deal fail

Nuno Mendes became the first signing of the 2022/23 season for Paris Saint-Germain. The Paris club exercised the purchase option it had in the contract with Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon, for 40 million euros, but the process was not easy.

According to L’Equipe, PSG wanted to negotiate with Sporting Lisbon to reduce this amount, but could not do so because Real Madrid appeared to be trying to spoil the deal.

The young Portuguese player was one of the most important talents in the French league and the Parisian team, to the extent that Real Madrid were interested in him, although L’Equipe left doubts about whether the benefit was real or a simple desire to incur Paris Saint-Germain financial losses in response to Mbappe’s strike.

Real Madrid and Manchester City had already put Nuno Mendes on their signature list when the youngster was a player at Sporting Portugal. Finally, it was Paris Saint-Germain who sealed the deal with the Lisbon club. It was a loan with an option to buy. Nuno Mendes had exploded under Ruben Amorim at Sporting and established himself as one of the best left-backs in the world.

The young Portuguese spent his first year well in Paris, although he wasn’t exactly the same. He worked as a full-back in a line of four defenders, which forced him to pay more attention to defense at the expense of attack. But its development is beyond doubt.

According to L’Equipe Always, Paris Saint-Germain tried to renegotiate the purchase option and Real Madrid broke in, which did not give the French club a choice. Either he pays 40 million or he risks losing one of his best additions and a player that Mbappe appreciates.
