After the storm subsides.. Benzema rationally talks about Mbappe refusal to sign for Real Madrid

Karim Benzema has opened up about the decision of his friend and fellow French international Kylian Mbappe to reject Real Madrid and stay at Paris Saint-Germain.

Mbappe has opted to extend his three-year contract with the Ligue 1 champions, keeping him in the French capital until 2025. This means he will not join Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer, as many expected – after he gave his word to the Spanish giants that he would join them. This year.

It comes less than a year after the French club rejected a world record transfer offer from Los Blancos for the striker, whose contract at Parc des Princes expires on June 30. The striker said last week that a decision on his future would be announced “within days” and that it would end a long-running saga.

Mbappe was said to have a valid verbal agreement to join Real Madrid earlier this season, and the striker had recently hinted at a move to the Spanish capital while a recent interview suggested he was open to leaving France. However, this move did not materialize and he has now forged a lucrative deal in Paris.

Real Madrid striker Benzema returned to the France squad last year after a five-year absence, and immediately formed an effective attacking partnership alongside Mbappe – who has long established himself as a star player for Didier Deschamps’ side, who starred in the 2018 World Cup crown.

Benzema has now given an interview to the TF1 program of the French channel Telefoot, where he was asked about Mbappe’s decision to stay at Paris Saint-Germain and said: “I wish he would be able to fulfill his dream of playing for Real Madrid.”

Benzema added: “He chose Paris Saint-Germain, we must respect him, this is his choice, he has many responsibilities. We will enjoy playing together in the national team. Everyone makes their own decisions. Real Madrid is Real Madrid, I am not disappointed. We are good friends, and it won’t affect our relationship.”

It appears that Benzema’s comments were an obvious move to pour cold water on any potential friction between the two players, who will continue to play alongside the French national team. However, this is the case for both players – it’s a problem that is not likely to go away completely.
