Karim Benzema led Real Madrid in Los Blancos’ victory over Liverpool 1-0 in the Champions League final on Saturday night in Paris and despite not scoring, his performance was still his best on the pitch.
Winning the title for the fifth time in his career is the perfect end to a season in which Benzema scored an astonishing 44 goals in 45 matches.
Despite being in the twilight of his career, the 34-year-old enjoyed his best year at club level and won the Golden Boot in La Liga with 27 goals – nine more than any other player as Real Madrid eventually won the title.
In the Champions League, he scored three goals against Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea and scored three goals in the first leg of the semi-final against Manchester City.
In doing so, he equaled the record set by Cristiano Ronaldo with the most goals scored in the knockout stages of the competition in a single season (10).
“The argument with the Ballon d’Or is over,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport. If Benzema does not win it, it is a travesty”.
Gerrard added: “The young children watch the match, they look at the strikers, they look at the goals, but if you want to see the best outspoken striker look at Benzema. He deserves the Ballon d’Or.”
The golden ball? Benzema said after the final: “I ended my season. I think with my team, I couldn’t do better than that. Anyway, I’m proud of what I’ve achieved. We have taught the whole world that we are alive and that we are here. Let’s see what happens with the Ballon d’Or because I have titles and other things on the field as well.”
Benzema is the current front-runner for the award – which will be handed out in October – followed by Sadio Mane. Other competitors include Kylian Mbappe, Robert Lewandowski and Kevin De Bruyne.
