Fabregas changes his mind about the favorite to win the Ballon d’Or after the Champions League final

Cesc Fabregas changed his mind about who should win the Ballon d’Or after Real Madrid beat Liverpool in the Champions League final.

Ahead of the match in Paris, the former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder tweeted: “I’m not a big fan of singles and like that, but surely the Ballon d’Or can/should be won tonight? mani? Salah? Benzema?

Real Madrid achieved a 1-0 victory over Liverpool at the Stade de France, and Vinicius Junior scored the only goal of the match. But Los Blancos goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was the club’s hero that night with some incredibly important saves.

In response to the Belgian goalkeeper’s performance, Fabregas revised his original post, tweeting after the match, “I would like to add Courtois and most likely give it to him. He’s had a crazy season.”

Speaking to the media after Real’s victory, Courtois said: “I said in a press conference yesterday, when Real Madrid plays in the finals, they win. I saw a lot of tweets saying I would be humbled. It was the other way around. Today I needed to win the final – for my career, for all the hard work, to give respect to my name because I don’t think I’m respected enough, especially in England. I saw a lot of criticism that I wasn’t good enough or whatever.”

On winning the title, he added: “I am really happy and proud of the team’s performance, and when I needed to be there I was there for the team. We beat the best clubs in the world. Liverpool was very strong today. I think I played a great match and that was the difference.”

Meanwhile, Alan Shearer said of the goalkeeper: “Thibaut Courtois was fantastic. Not only in the number of saves he made, but he controlled the penalty area and gave the defenders a chance to relax.”
