Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois called on people to “respect his name” after inspiring his team to win the Champions League final over Liverpool.
The Belgian goalkeeper put in a superb display to keep Liverpool in turmoil, as the Spanish champions secured a 1-0 win and with it their 14th European title.
Courtois, who spent five years at Chelsea, admitted after the win that it was in response to criticism from those in England.
Speaking to BT Sport, he said: “Yesterday at the press conference I said that when Real Madrid play in the finals, they win. I am on the good side of history. I’ve seen a lot of tweets criticizing me.”
He added: “Today I needed to win the final of my career, for all the hard work to give respect to my name because I don’t think I have enough respect, especially in England. I’ve seen a lot of criticism even after a great season.”
He continued, “I am really proud of the team. We stuck to the win and when the team needed I was there. We beat some of the best clubs in the world. City and Liverpool have been fantastic this season. They fought to the end in the Premier League, Liverpool won two cups and they were really strong.”
He continued: “We played a great match today. We had one chance and we scored it.”
And he ended his statements by apologizing to his brother, saying: “I apologize to my brother who will marry tomorrow and I will not be able to attend his wedding, but on Monday there will be another civil marriage and I will be there.”
Real Madrid’s victory is Courtois’ first Champions League victory after joining in 2018 after the club’s three European titles in a row.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men have already won La Liga this season, with their Champions League victory becoming their fifth European title since 2014.
