The blow of Kylian Mbappe not arriving at Real Madrid at the end of the season made the club move quickly and consider signing another great striker. One of the names on the table is that of Rafael Liao.
Given the rumors coming out of Spain, it was Paolo Maldini who came out to clear things up. Milan’s sporting director stated that his player has a release clause of 150 million euros and that this would be the only way to sign him. Thus, the former Italian player sends a warning to those interested, led by Real Madrid.
Maldini told La Gazzetta dello Sport: “Leao is still in a difficult position, he has had big improvements from year to year. We took him from Lille and paid them 24 million and immediately put a 150 million clause into his contract. We believe in him, he’s always been a hero. Now he has to follow an unfinished path. He is very smart and needs some help. I talked to him a lot.”
He added: “If Milan is not at Leao’s level or Leao is not at Milan’s level in the future, things can change. But at the moment the growth is tremendous for the club and the player.”
The 22-year-old has stunned this season at Milan, who were crowned Serie A champions. In his personal capacity, he was also named Player of the Tournament. The Portuguese finished with 14 goals and 12 assists in 42 matches he played in all competitions. He has been a pillar of the Pewley team, despite his young age.
Clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United are also following him closely. Madrid has the advantage that Liao’s agent is Jorge Mendes, who is closely associated with the white club in the past with other Portuguese who represented them (Cristiano, Mourinho, Pepe…). Milan, however, clarifies his position. The solution would be to pay 150 million euros.
