Emery criticizes Mbappe: “What he did is not good for football”

Villarreal wrapped up their La Liga season on Sunday evening, beating Barcelona 2-0 at Camp Nou to secure a place in next season’s Europa League. They will be the first Spanish club to compete in the competition.

Speaking after the match, Unai Emery touched upon Kylian Mbappe’s decision to reject Real Madrid in favor of staying at Paris Saint-Germain. Emery of course coached Mbappe during his time as technical director at Paris Saint-Germain.

Mbappe’s contract with PSG expired this summer and for months he was supposed to join Madrid. It is known that he dreamed of playing at the Santiago Bernabeu and following in the footsteps of his idol, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Instead, Mbappe decided to renew his contract with Paris Saint-Germain at the last minute, just over a week before Real Madrid faced Liverpool in the Champions League final at the Stade de France in Paris.

Mbappe is considered one of the best players in European football, and the failure to sign him is a blow to Real Madrid and La Liga.

“It’s a very personal decision but it’s too late,” Emery said. I appreciate the boy a lot and respect his decision, but not the timing or the way he made that decision. This is not good for football.”
