Jurgen Klopp raises the white flag for Real Madrid before the Champions League final

Jurgen Klopp has expressed his disappointment for Manchester City after surrendering midweek in the Champions League semi-final but praised Real Madrid’s return.

The German coach is looking forward to facing the team that beat the Reds in the 2018 final.

He said in his press conference: “When we lost that final [in 2018], my favorite solution was to play the final again next year and I hoped it was against Real Madrid, that was at that moment. But we played Tottenham, who were very good.”

He added: “It seems that this is our destiny. It was strange and Manchester City were unlucky, but what Real Madrid did was fantastic.”

“They succeeded against Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and City. I said that before we played Villarreal, if you can beat Bayern Munich you deserve to be in the semi-finals – and if you eliminate those three, you definitely deserve to be in the final.”

Whether it’s a form of flattery or a match of mind is a matter of opinion, but Klopp raises the white flag and openly declares Real Madrid the favorites for the final.

“They are now the great candidates with all their experience and all that stuff,” Klopp said. We’re more experienced than we have been, probably, but it’s clearly not comparable to theirs. There are still a lot of players out there for them and us, which is a good sign too.”

He continued: “It will be a great match. We weren’t happy that night (2018 final), that’s obvious, but that happened a while ago. I’m happy to go there and try it again, but until then, there are a lot of games to be played and you (the journalists) are going to ask a lot of questions about Real Madrid now and then, so I think we can stop here.”

He ended his remarks by saying: “What Carlo [Ancelotti] did there is absolutely amazing – and if you go to the final, I think it’s good to have the idea that you want to win it and that’s what we’ll be working on in the week of May 22-28, not before.”
