Real Madrid surprised Manchester City with the astonishment that Guardiola and his players suffered the biggest crushing defeat with another epic late comeback at the Bernabeu.
Manchester City lost 6-5 on aggregate after conceding two killer goals in 91 seconds, before Karim Benzema’s penalty kick in extra time, which caused the Sky Blues to be ejected.
The crushing defeat means Guardiola has yet to win the elite award in European football in six attempts since taking charge of City in 2016.
Guardiola’s latest failure has led to suggestions that the Spaniard may decide to end his spell at City at the end of next season, when his current contract expires.
Despite struggling with the exit while his place in the final was close at hand, Guardiola is said to be more determined to lift the trophy and bring it to the city of Manchester.
To underscore that commitment, it is understood that the 51-year-old is ready to sign a contract extension that will keep him at City until 2025.
But Guardiola is excited to be working with Norway striker Erling Haaland, who is expected to join the club this summer from Borussia Dortmund in a £63m deal.
Guardiola is convinced that Haaland can make all the difference when it comes to conquering Europe, as City missed a raft of chances to effectively seal qualification in the first leg at the Etihad Stadium.
After winning the Champions League twice as coach with Barcelona, Guardiola has not lifted the trophy since 2011, falling behind at Bayern Munich and now at City.
But Guardiola feels he is not done with the competition, despite his immediate focus on ensuring that City beat Champions League finalists Liverpool in the Premier League title race.
City are one point ahead of Liverpool in the title race, but could fall behind Jurgen Klopp’s men ahead of kick-off against Newcastle on Sunday, if their rival beat Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield 24 hours before.
Guardiola knows his side must recover from their European grief and ensure they win the title to have something to show for another epic season.
