Carlo Ancelotti was asked if he was no longer surprised by Real Madrid’s comeback after his side added a superb win over Manchester City to previous victories over Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.
“I can’t say that we are used to living this kind of life, but what happened tonight happened against Chelsea and also against PSG, if you want me to say why, I would say that the reason is the history of this club that helps us carry on when it looks like we are defeated.” .
Speaking after Real Madrid overcame a 4-3 defeat in the first leg which was 5-3 before the 90th minute of the return leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, Ancelotti was in fact baffled by what his team had accomplished.
Rodrygo scored in the 90th minute and the first minute of stoppage time to equalize the score with five goals, and Karim Benzema won and converted a penalty early in the first overtime to conclude another trip to play the Champions League final. It will happen on May 28 in Paris against Liverpool.
Ancelotti told the BBC: “The match was coming to an end and we were able to find the last energy we had. We played a good match against a strong opponent. When we were able to equalize, we had a psychological advantage in overtime. It was difficult because City were in control of the game but the last chance we were able to go into extra time.”
The match is scheduled to be Ancelotti’s fifth appearance in the Champions League final, and the first in the history of the competition. Ancelotti enters the match 3-1 in the Champions League finals.
The Italian said: “I am happy to be in the final, in Paris against another great opponent we are used to. It will be a great football match.”
