Eintracht Frankfurt’s shock 3-2 victory over Barcelona at the Camp Nou caused a sensation in European football this week, as the Catalans were eliminated from the Europa League quarter-finals by the German side.
Arriving in the second leg, Eintracht performed exceptionally well, offering Barcelona very little control in midfield while launching ferocious counter-attacks that paralyzed full-backs Oscar Mingueza and Jordi Alba.
Christian Jakic was one of the champions of Eintracht Frankfurt in their famous victory over Barcelona. The Croatian defensive midfielder starred in both games, providing a strong resistance to the defensive line and making life difficult for the likes of Jaffe and Pedri.
Speaking to the media after the victory, Jakic revealed his promise to Real Madrid midfielder and teammate Luka Modric to beat Barcelona in the European League match.
Before the match, Modric told Jakic: “You have to beat Barcelona.” The Frankfurt star fulfilled his promise with an unforgettable show at the Camp Nou.
Revealing the promise, Jakic told Croatian Sportske Novosti: “Captain, I promise we will win!” Well, I kept my promise. When you promise something, you have to keep it, right?”
However, not everything was smiling for Christian Jakic in the end, as his yellow card in the 24th minute means he will miss the first leg of the semi-final against West Ham United.
That could come as a huge blow for Eintracht Frankfurt, who will also miss defender Ivan Ndica after he was sent off for a second yellow card.
Ndica’s penalty nearly set the stage for a late comeback, but it was too late for Xavi’s men in the end.
