Carlo Ancelotti wanted to “support” the penalty takers in the event of a draw against Chelsea in the Champions League quarter-final second leg. The Italian coach chose seven players ready to take penalties.
Specifically, these are the players that the Italian coach targeted for possible penalties in the match: Benzema, Modric, Kroos, Casemiro, Rodrygo, Asensio and David Alaba. They were all consulted by the technical staff and said yes to the proposal.
Ancelotti wants to leave all possible scenarios closed for Tuesday’s match. At the club they know that the confrontation is on the right track, but they know what the Champions League is and anything can happen.
Both Carlo and his assistants know that this list is not final because as the match progresses this may change. Ideally, these players would be in the “green zone” if the time came, as they have shown a lot of quality in that situation.
All of them are the players who scored the best hits in the team and showed the most effectiveness in training. In any case, Ancelotti is confident that his team will be able to win and qualify and not resort to penalty shootouts.
We have to go back to the 2015/16 season, in the Champions League final where Real Madrid faced Atlético Madrid. Only Lucas Vazquez, Gareth Bale and Marcelo scored in that historic match in which the Whites managed to win.
None of the three were chosen, although as we say, they can be counted on if the penalties are finally taken. Several players on the team have experienced these moments and they know how to manage the pressure in these types of matches.
Real Madrid is facing one of the most important matches of the season and they don’t want to miss the chance to be in the Champions League semi-finals again. Chelsea will try to get it all out on Tuesday, but what we are sure of is that it will be a great game.
