Thibaut Courtois criticized his Real Madrid teammates after their defeat by Barcelona in the Clasico on Sunday.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side were humiliated at the Santiago Bernabeu by their biggest rivals, with Pierre-Emerick-Aubameyang scoring a brace, while Ronald Araujo and Ferran Torres scored two more.
Los Blancos were missing some key players, including Karim Benzema, but had more time to prepare for the match as Barcelona played away to Galatasaray in the Europa League on Thursday.
After the match, Courtois told Spanish TV channel Movistar: “Today we presented an unacceptable image for this club. There are missing players, but you did not notice that the Barcelona players played Thursday (in Istanbul).”
He added: “They found a lot of space. We were not cohesive and could not dodge the goals. For the first goal, they expect better at the front post and we didn’t move on the second goal either. After the break, we thought we could come back, and 10 seconds later Ferran Torres was one-on-one against me.”
Courtois, in his post-match interview, also questioned coach Carlo Ancelotti’s tactics.
He pointed to the last time Real Madrid played a false number nine – which was in their 1-0 Copa del Rey exit against Athletic Bilbao last month.
“We will have to talk about tactics internally,” he said. It didn’t work at the start of the match or the second half, we have to discuss it internally, not here.”
He added: “We played with a fake number nine striker in the Copa del Rey, and we hardly shot any shots on the opponent’s goal, and the same thing happened here. We started well, we had a chance with Fede Valverde, which Marc ter Stegen saved well, but from there we fell back.”
He ended his statements by saying: “This badge asks you to fight and in the second half we did not do that. We could have lost more than that.”
Fortunately for Real Madrid, they have already made a comfortable lead at the top of La Liga – nine points behind Sevilla with nine games remaining.
Barcelona suffered a miserable start to the season under former coach Ronald Koeman but found his way again under club legend Xavi.
They have now won their last five games and are up to third place in the league, three points behind Sevilla with a game in hand.
