Paris Saint-Germain is watching the imminent departure of Kylian Mbappe from his team to Real Madrid. This farewell marks a turning point for the Parisian club, which has already begun to work on changing this dynamic in the future. Yohan Cabaye, the sports coordinator at the Paris Saint-Germain training center, admits how the club is already working to strengthen the players’ affiliation and prevent the Mbappe scenario from happening again.
In the junior categories in Paris Saint-Germain they want to highlight the feeling of belonging to the club, to the colors, something that has been happening for a long time in other historical clubs such as Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. The Mbappe case reveals the dilemma that the powerful Ligue 1 team still faces.
“Our goal at the center is to work with them to create that sense of pride, belonging to the club’s colors and everything that Paris Saint-Germain represents in the history of French and world football. Playing for PSG means something. To be able to feel it,” Cabaye admitted, in an interview at L’Equipe.
“Continuing this work is to develop players who are able to approach the professional world and of course our first team. Every year, there are those who get closer. We are working to provide more in the future,” admits the former Paris Saint-Germain player. Nobody knows better than him, last summer Leonardo and Al-Khelaifi signed him for this new project, which must start from the base, at the Academy.
“I have an established relationship with Angelo Castellazzi (Deputy Sports Director) and with Leonardo. Between the formation and the professional team, this bond is daily. It’s simple, you have to speak from the heart. Getting a chance to enter the professional world of your favorite club in these colors, this logo, it’s amazing.
Is there room for youth? I really think so. There have been many players who have played this season. (Mishot, Xavi Simmons, and Yansani Soko). There is room. The evidence is there.”
The second key to this plan launched by Paris Saint-Germain is to move forward with it. In the past, the Paris club bragged about signing the best players, but they were already stars. This happened with Mbappe. He moved from Bondi (Parisian Quarter) to Monaco. Only when he exploded in the French league did PSG take care of him.
What if he was a junior club? In this case, the feeling of the French striker will be greater, which will make him reconsider leaving Paris. He wasn’t the only one. As happened with Nkunko, Diaby, Koeman, Rabiot…or French stars like Griezmann and Benzema.
“Pierre Raynaud (the Scout) and his squad have made very good generations for us. The goal of the Training Center is to create the best possible player. And to make sure he’s with us, not that others have achieved it,” says Kabaye.
Mbappe’s departure will be a sign before and after in Paris Saint-Germain. The preference of the French football star and the city of Paris to play in another league and another club will be crucial for the club in taking a step forward in the cause of the academy.
