At David Alaba, we look at perhaps one of the most profitable deals for Real Madrid in decades.
He arrived amid a club storm, with Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane just leaving, but the Austrian defender has certainly proven his worth since his move to the Santiago Bernabeu and cushioned the blow of the club’s legends loss.
Alaba showed the world last Wednesday against Paris Saint-Germain that a player can be decisive without appearing in the attack or without scoring the winning goal.
He was a captain, from the first minute to the 90th minute.
He lifted Eder Militao when he was about to request the substitution, famously lifting the chair in celebration of Karim Benzema’s third goal, but above all he got ahead in time and helped Real Madrid advance even deeper to the top of Europe.
With the score 1-0 in favor of PSG, a simple step forward by the Austrian resulted in Mbappe offside, rendering Neymar’s pass and the Frenchman’s subsequent goal ineffective, in one of his many special moments at the club.
Watching the Alaba match makes one wonder how he could have left the completely dominant Bayern Munich to join Real Madrid.
The answer is simple: he knew that in order to improve and play for a bigger club, he only had one way to play for Real Madrid, this is what those around him said about his decision to leave the German giant and reject other better economic offers or other teams like Barcelona, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain .
Alaba and Mbappe write the same story. Both decided that Real Madrid suited them, saying no to renewing contracts with Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain respectively.
The Frenchman’s move has been in the pipeline for years and is nearing completion. What he tested at the Santiago Bernabeu was the last straw in PSG’s coffin and the deal will be completed next week. The defender’s deal was slow to come when his decision to leave Bayern was firm and the Bavarian club officially recognized him in December 2020.
Two players can go anywhere they want
These are two players who can contribute to any side on the planet, and they are able to make decisions based not only on money, but on prestige.
They could choose from among the eleven top clubs on the planet, and they chose Real Madrid.
Both have opted to change clubs so they can see what it’s like to play for a team that has won 13 Champions League titles.
Both of them (Mbappe shortly) left two great teams and did so without betraying them. One has not reached an agreement with Bayern, with Real Madrid in mind, and the other has asked to be sold so PSG can get a return on their investment in it.
Much has been said about Mbappe, but the Alaba deal will go down in Real Madrid’s history. It will happen because of cost, performance and something intangible like leadership, which he has shown since arriving at the Bernabeu in the summer.
