David Alaba gave an interview to Germany’s Sport 1, in which he spoke frankly about his first great European night with Real Madrid and the wonderful atmosphere that surrounded a match that is truly historic for the Whites. The match in which the Austrian left a creative celebration after Benzema’s third goal.
The Remontada
“Since the first leg in Paris we thought every day that we would reach the quarter-finals and of course we are very happy that we did.”
Team mental strength
“Yes, but even after conceding a goal, we kept our cool and kept pushing. In my first season in Madrid, I didn’t want to be dragged out of the Champions League in the round of 16. We all believed in winning.”
Bernabeu pressure
“We knew the match would be different at the Bernabeu and that our fans and our atmosphere would be a deciding factor. The atmosphere in the stadium was very special. I knew from my previous visits to the Bernabéu that it is a stadium that can develop its own strength. This was the case against PSG. The fans didn’t leave us alone on the field, they cheered throughout the match and we were able to reward them, it was a magical night.”
Celebrating the chair
“It’s good to try new festivities from time to time. And the chair was good. I didn’t think about it much, I just expressed my feelings at the time. With such a great comeback, you can go crazy [laughs].”
Benzema
“Everyone knows how important Karim is to us. He won the match with three goals, but his charisma, strength and leadership qualities are also very important. He’s a world-class player, and we hope he’ll score three more goals in the quarter-finals.”
next contender
“If we play like PSG, we can beat any team in Europe.”
