Chelsea offers a player to Real Madrid

Chelsea set the asking price for Timo Werner after offering the German striker to Real Madrid, the Spanish league and Champions League champions.

The Blues are open to upcoming offers for Werner, who suffered a turbulent spell at Stamford Bridge after moving for £47.5m from Germany’s RB Leipzig in 2020.

While Werner helped Chelsea win the Champions League in his first season in West London, he received criticism for his termination and struggled to cement his place in Thomas Tuchel’s starting line-up.

Werner was used mainly as a substitute last season and his problems have now been exacerbated by the arrival of Raheem Sterling from Manchester City.

As a result, the 26-year-old is said to be interested in a summer transfer and has been strongly linked to his former club RB Leipzig and Chelsea’s Premier League rival Newcastle United.

But Marca says Real Madrid are also in a state of confusion as Chelsea recently contacted him to discuss a deal for Werner.

Real Madrid are keen to boost Carlo Ancelotti’s attacking options ahead of the transfer deadline, and Werner is said to cost around €35m (£30m).

Werner could join the Champions League holders on a season-long loan deal with an option to buy at the end of the 2022-23 season, although the German will have to play a backup role for Karim Benzema at the Bernabeu.

Last month, Werner suggested he was ready to leave Chelsea this summer, telling reporters: “First of all, the most important thing is that I’m happy. I am happy when I play and score goals. this is the truth. That’s what I have to take care of and other things will come.”

“Obviously I want to play more and I have to play more in order to be in good shape to have a chance to play in the World Cup,” he added.

And he concluded: “I think it does not change anything, whether the World Cup is in the winter or in the summer. I think if I play half the season or the whole season, I have to play.”

But Tuchel, the Blues coach, has since denied speculation that Werner will leave, saying: “I don’t know, Timo hasn’t spoken to me about it. At the moment I think he wants to make his way at Chelsea. He still has to prove his point.”
